UC Berkeley offering fellowships to African journalists

(Ijnet) The Graduate School of Journalism at the University of Berkeley, California in the United States is now accepting applications for its 2010-2011 fellowships for African journalists. Application deadline: March 29.

Three year-long fellowships are being offered, each amounting to approximately US$36,000 (including airfare, stipends, and living expenses).

CFR Seeks Nominations for the Edward R. Murrow Press Fellowship

The 2010-2011 competition is open to individuals who have covered international news as working journalists for print, broadcast, or online media widely available in the United States. The fellow is granted nine months of research, writing, and involvement in all activities at the Council in New York. The program gives the fellow an opportunity to broaden his
or her perspective on international affairs and to pursue research using CFR resources, such as participating in events sponsored by the Meetings and Studies programs, speaking for and moderating study groups, and sharing expertise and advising on other projects.

In the view to the set-up of a project on press freedom in Eastern Africa, with the support of European Union, the Eastern Africa journalists Association (EAJA) based at Djibouti is seeking for an Accountant. Under the responsibility of the project coordinator, he or she will be in relations with the EAJA staff, the IFJ Africa Office based at Dakar (Sénégal) and national coordinators in 10 East African countries.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

-Programming, set-up, monitoring and reporting of the financial management of a two-years project with various activities such as surveys, training, organization of national and regional workshops
- To ensure that all the financial reports and receipts due to the donors are done and sent in the deadlines
-
To take care of the good execution expenses according to the principles of good governance
-To participate to the training of national coordinators in financial procedures and the tools project management;
-Participation to the financial management of other EAJA projects.

COMPETENCES AND SKILLS

Training and background :
Ø
Master degree in Finance, Account, Management ;
Ø
At least 5 years of experience including 3 years in a similar position ; 
Ø
Confirmed experience in EU projects management procedures
Ø
Good knowledge on the Eastern African media context
Ø
Experience in research methodology, and conducting surveys ;
ØExperience on project management tools and key-words (conception, planning, set-up and evaluation).

Skills :

Excellent speaking and writing skills in english and usually in french ;
ð
Easy use of the Office (Word, Excel) and Accounting softwares and Internet.

Easy skills of adaptation;
ð
Leadership, autonomy and working under pressure;

Dynamism, rigour and organization;

  4. Management of relationship between partners, consultants, experts, external and internal working groups.

Ø Master or bachelor degree in communication, journalism, information science, political science, social science or project management;

World Press Freedom Prize UNESCO/ Guillermo Cano

 

UNESCO established the World Press Freedom Prize in honour of Guillermo Cano, a Colombian journalist who died in the exercise of his profession. The purpose of the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize is to reward each year a person, organization or institution that has made a notable contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially if risks have been involved. The objective of the Prize is in conformity with UNESCO’s policies and is related to the programme of the Organization in the field of communication and information and, more specifically, to the priority given to promoting an enabling environment for freedom of expression and freedom of information.
