The Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program at the Washington, D.C.-based National Endowment for Democracy invites applications for fellowships in 2011-2012. The program enables democracy activists, practitioners, scholars, and journalists from around the world to deepen their understanding of democracy and enhance their ability to promote democratic change. Dedicated to international exchange, this five-month, residential program offers a collegial environment for fellows to reflect on their experiences; consider best practices and lessons learned; conduct research and writing; engage with counterparts; and develop professional relationships within a global network of democracy advocates.

The program is intended primarily to support practitioners, scholars, and journalists from developing and aspiring democracies; distinguished scholars from established democracies may also apply. A working knowledge of English is required. All fellows receive a monthly stipend, health insurance, travel assistance, and research support. The program does not fund professional training, fieldwork, or students working towards a degree.

Training course "Communicating Labour Rights"

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is the UN tripartite agency dealing with all issues related to labour. The ILO has an International Training Centre in Turin, Italy, which is once again running a course for media professionals to help them in reporting on social, labour and workplace issues. I would like to request your help in publicizing this training - which is more and more requested - to the media and their members.

The fourth interregional training course "Communicating Labour Rights" (code A972459) will take place in Turin from 9 to 13 August 2010. It will be conducted in English.

The course aims to equip media professionals with the knowledge and skills to use international labour standards drawn up and overseen by the ILO and the work of the Organization’s supervisory bodies in their reporting. The training will give participants practical insight to human and workers' rights and, at the same time, it will allow them to share experience among themselves and the resource persons.

The course is addressed to journalists, correspondents, publicists, reporters, editors, publishers, public relations professionals and press officers - including those of employers', workers', governmental and non-governmental organizations and international organizations working in all types of media (print, radio, television and the Internet).

Participation costs are as follows: 1,390 euros for tuition fees (covering preparation, residential and on-line phases) plus 960 euros for subsistence. A limited number of partial fellowships are available for candidates from eligible countries. Please note that, in compliance with our procedures, we will have to ask for the approval by the Secretaries of the workers’ and employers’ group within the Governing Body of the ILO before awarding fellowships to information officers of workers’ and employers’ organizations.

Attached please find the course description and the nomination form to be filled in by candidates. Applications to participate should be submitted, by e-mail
 (
ils-fpr@itcilo.org) or by fax (+39.011.6936906), by 25 June 2010.

Participants in the course will have the opportunity to participate in the next year edition of the international journalistic Prize “Media for Labour Rights”. For more information, downlaod:
